Maudsley Site - Maudsley & Bethlem Hospital School
BackMaudsley and Bethlem Hospital School provides education to children and young people receiving inpatient mental health treatment. Based across the Maudsley and Bethlem Royal Hospitals, the school ensures that pupils continue to access high-quality learning while being supported through recovery and treatment. Education is delivered in close collaboration with clinical teams, adapted to individual need, and focused on fostering curiosity, confidence and a sense of progress.
We support learners aged 11 to 18 across a variety of specialist wards, including general adolescent units, eating disorder wards and units for young people with neurodevelopmental conditions. Many of our learners have faced disruption to their education due to health-related needs. At Maudsley and Bethlem Hospital School, we support them to rebuild confidence in learning, re-engage with academic subjects, and develop skills that support transitions back to mainstream education or further provision.
Our teaching is adaptive, creative, and shaped by pupil need. We offer a broad curriculum that spans core academic subjects, creative arts, enrichment activities and personalised learning. With small class groups and a flexible approach, staff are able to provide individual attention while fostering a group environment where pupils feel safe, respected and encouraged. We work in close partnership with families, mainstream schools and professionals to maintain strong links with each young person’s wider context and future plans.
Collaboration is key to our work. Teachers meet regularly with multi-disciplinary teams including psychologists, nurses and social workers to ensure education plans are joined up and meaningful. We understand that education during hospitalisation is more than academic—it is a vital part of recovery and a foundation for reintegration. We are proud to provide a calm, stable and ambitious space for pupils at a challenging point in their lives.
