Welcome

Welcome to King’s College Hospital School, a specialist hospital school within The Goldfinch Trust, providing high-quality education for children and young people while they receive medical care at King’s College Hospital.

A message from Maarten Crommelin, Chief Executive Officer

It is a privilege to lead King’s College Hospital School and to work alongside a highly skilled and committed team. Teaching in a hospital setting calls for flexibility, creativity and strong professional judgement, and our staff bring this to their work every day.

Our pupils come to us at challenging points in their lives. Our role is to meet them where they are, provide calm structure and appropriate challenge, and keep learning meaningful and achievable during their time in hospital. Education can offer continuity, reassurance and a sense of progress when it is needed most.

We are committed to high standards, balanced with a deep understanding of individual need. By working closely with clinical teams and home schools, we support pupils to move forward with confidence, whatever their next step may be.

Maudsley 034

Maarten Crommelin, Chief Executive Officer

Our school exists to ensure that education does not pause when health becomes the priority. We work across hospital wards and clinical settings, delivering personalised teaching that supports learning, wellbeing and continuity at a time when pupils and families may be facing significant challenge. Whether a pupil is with us for a short stay or a longer period, our focus remains the same: to offer stability, purpose and meaningful learning within the hospital day.

We recognise that every pupil’s experience of illness and treatment is different. Teaching at King’s College Hospital School is therefore flexible, responsive and rooted in understanding. Lessons are adapted to pupils’ energy levels, emotional needs and medical circumstances, while maintaining high expectations and a belief in each learner’s potential. Our aim is to help pupils stay connected to their education, rebuild confidence and experience success, even in difficult moments.

We work closely with clinical teams, families, home schools and local authorities to ensure pupils are supported both during their time with us and in planning for next steps. Collaboration is central to our work, allowing us to provide education that is joined-up, thoughtful and aligned with each pupil’s wider care and learning journey.

We hope this website gives you a clear sense of who we are and how we work. Whether you are a parent, professional or partner, we look forward to working with you in support of our pupils.
