National School Governors’ Awareness Day 2026
National School Governors’ Awareness Day is a key date in the education governance calendar, created to recognise governors and trustees for the vital contribution they make to school communities. The next National School Governors’ Awareness Day is today, on Thursday 12 February 2026.
Across the country, governors and trustees form one of the largest volunteer forces in education. Their role is essential, providing strategic support, ensuring accountability, and helping schools maintain high standards for children and young people. This day is an important moment to celebrate the difference governance makes, both behind the scenes and across the whole system.
Good governance makes a real difference. It brings clarity, strong decision making and the right strategic challenge to help schools grow and improve.
As we approach National School Governors’ Awareness Day, we want to take the opportunity to recognise the impact of school and trust governance, and to thank the volunteers who support education through their time, expertise and commitment.
We are grateful to Strictly Education Ltd, Governors for Schools and Judicium Education for highlighting National School Governors’ Awareness Day and for keeping the importance of governance firmly on the education agenda.
At The Goldfinch Trust, our Trustees and Governors play a key role in shaping our strategic direction, strengthening oversight and ensuring our schools continue to deliver high quality education. This is especially important within our specialist hospital education settings, where pupils’ needs are complex and learning must be flexible, responsive and carefully supported.
Strong governance helps to ensure that our work remains focused on the needs of children and young people. Trustees and governors provide support and scrutiny across areas such as educational outcomes, safeguarding, wellbeing, finance, sustainability and long term planning. Their involvement helps ensure the Trust remains ambitious, accountable and resilient.
Being part of governance is also incredibly rewarding. It offers a valuable insight into how a trust operates and how strategic decisions are made. Many trustees and governors develop skills in leadership, planning, oversight and collaboration, while contributing to work that has meaningful impact for pupils, families and staff.
At its heart, governance is about service. It is about supporting schools to deliver the best possible education, creating strong foundations for improvement, and ensuring that every child is given the opportunity to thrive, whatever their circumstances.
We would like to say a sincere thank you to all of our Trustees and Governors for the time, care and expertise they bring to The Goldfinch Trust. Your contribution supports our schools, strengthens our organisation and helps us deliver on our mission every day.
As National School Governors’ Awareness Day approaches, we are proud to celebrate governance across our Trust and the difference it continues to make!
