Visiting the Houses of Parliament

A group of Citizenship students from Maudsley and Bethlem Hospital School, part of The Goldfinch Trust, recently visited the Houses of Parliament for a guided tour of the House of Commons and the House of Lords.

For many of our young people, opportunities to step into nationally significant institutions are powerful moments. Experiencing Parliament first hand brings democratic processes to life in a way that no textbook can fully replicate.

Why visits like this matter

Opportunities like this support pupils to:

  • Strengthen their understanding of democratic processes

  • Connect classroom learning with real world institutions

  • Build confidence in formal and historic settings

  • Engage directly with the heritage and structure of Parliament

Experiences beyond the classroom can help reinforce knowledge in a practical and memorable way. They also provide space for discussion, reflection and curiosity.

"Our young people participated fully in the Q&A sessions on the history, art and architecture of these iconic spaces and represented the school with dignity and maturity."

A meaningful experience

In specialist settings, creating opportunities for enrichment beyond the classroom is an important part of supporting personal development. Structured visits such as this enable young people to apply their learning, develop social confidence and experience success in new contexts.

We are glad to provide experiences that deepen understanding, build confidence and reinforce the message that every young person has a place within our democratic society.
