Pride Month: Inclusion in Education
June marks Pride Month, an opportunity to recognise and celebrate positive LGBTQ+ communities, while reflecting on the importance of inclusion, dignity and belonging across our schools and wider Trust community.
At The Goldfinch Trust, inclusion is central to our work with children and young people whose educational journeys have been affected by medical and mental health needs. Our role is to ensure that every learner feels safe, respected and supported to engage with education as themselves.
For LGBTQ+ young people, including those exploring or expressing their identity, school can play an important role in fostering safety, consistency and connection. This is especially important for learners who may already be navigating complex experiences linked to health, wellbeing or time away from mainstream education. Inclusive practice means recognising that identity, gender expression and lived experiences are part of how young people understand themselves and the world around them. It also means responding with care and professionalism, so that every learner feels seen.
Across the Trust, staff continue to prioritise approaches that support access to learning, wellbeing and belonging. This includes:
These approaches help create consistency across our schools and support young people to reconnect with education in environments shaped by respect and understanding.
Our continued focus on inclusion supports the Trust’s commitment to high quality, personalised education. It helps ensure that pupils and staff experience our schools as safe, thoughtful and respectful places.
