Music on the Wards
At King’s College Hospital School, part of The Goldfinch Trust, pupils recently experienced a day of live performances across the wards, transforming the hospital environment through sound, creativity and connection.
Musicians from City of London Sinfonia visited wards throughout the day, delivering one to one interactions, small group sessions and relaxed performances. From quiet bedside moments to shared experiences, pupils engaged in ways that felt comfortable, personal and uplifting.
The response from pupils and families was overwhelmingly positive. Sessions were described as calming, joyful and a welcome highlight of the day. Parents spoke about the difference the performances made, creating a more relaxed atmosphere and giving young people something genuinely enjoyable to look forward to.
Creative experiences play a significant role in supporting wellbeing, particularly in healthcare settings. They can lift mood, reduce anxiety and offer a sense of normality in unfamiliar environments.
Within hospital schools, initiatives like this go beyond enrichment. They create space for expression, interaction and shared moments that break up the clinical routine. Live performance brings an added dimension, encouraging participation and connection in real time.
“Music is a powerful tool for learning, expression and connection.”
Music on the Wards is a strong example of how creative provision can enhance the school day and support pupils holistically. By bringing high quality live performance directly to young people, the school continues to prioritise both wellbeing and engagement.
The Goldfinch Trust extends its thanks to City of London Sinfonia for their continued collaboration, and to the Jack Petchey Foundation for generously funding the event and enabling these experiences to take place.
These sessions bring energy, comfort and connection into the hospital setting, leaving a lasting impression on pupils, families and staff alike.
